Cooling and quietness go hand in hand. The S2 runs as cool as ice and as quiet as a mouse. The S2 is probably the quietest premium media production computer in the world largely due to the collection of near noiseless fans and cooling that it ships with.
Chassis Air Flow
The chassis is designed to pull in cool air from the front grill of the computer and cause it to flow over the internal components like hard drives, memory and CPU and ultimately be expelled out the back of the machine as hot exhaust. This expulsion is the job of 2 fans on the rear panel of the chassis. The first is a general exhaust fan for the internal cavity of the computer and the second is at teh back of the power supply. The fact that Aluminum is conducts heat 4 times better than steel means that the chassis itself helps to dissipate some heat to the cooller outside.
We worked very hard to find what we consider the best and quietest combinations of cooling components available. We built the Professional S3 to be a work horse, we built it to run night and day 24/7, we made sure that it does all this, all at once, and still stays cool and quiet. We love this computer and so will you.
CPU Cooling
The Intel Pentium D is a dual core processor and as such produces significant amounts of heat. To keep this high powered beast cool requires a big fan. Intel goes so far as to include the fan with teh CPU. As you would expect, we raised heaven and earth to find a big fan that is capable of cooling the CPU queitly as quiet computing is one of the cornerstones of MusicXPC. We are happy to report that we found such a fan in the Swiss design CPU cooler that uses advance Fluid Dynamic Bearings to dramatically reduce the amount of noise the computer generates. Air is pulled in from the top of the fan assembly and blown out.

Beyond that, the fan assembly sits on rubber connectors that act as a vibration damper to prevent the transmission of fan vibrations to other areas of the chassis. This makes the Professional S3 one of the quietest MusicXPC computers ever created. This chart is a comparison made by Swiss company AC GmbH.

Noise Level in Sone?
Sone is a measurement of loudness as opposed to dB which is a measure of sound intensity. Sone is a better unit of measure for indicating exactly how annoying a noise level becomes to your ear. For a good explanation of noise check this link from the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia.
Very Quiet Results
The Professional S3 is a very quiet computer. It was designed to do just that and it succeeded. We are confident in proclaiming that this is a computer that can be placed on a desktop, in a control room and not irritate your ears or get in the way of production. That's the least our customers demand
